Guarding our ecosystems- Marshlands and Wetlands
In the last decade, the conservation of our ecosystem features gained excessive importance. The last few years have observed a considerable hop on awareness of the conservation of marshlands. Marshlands or esturine habitat are areas which are transitional between terrestrial and aquatic systems. In this article the water is usually at the area. The property is included in stagnant drinking water that does not surpass 6 yards. They are considered important as they may be home to various species of plants and creatures. Wetlands protects 6 %of the earth`s land area. This includes marshes, mangroves fens, swamps, bodies of water etc . That they store normal water for a long period of the time and help retain floods in balance. They also stop coastal erosion. Despite the fact that these marshlands are crucial the reduction in the levels of those areas are extremely apparent. The government, in a census, has identified 648, 507 hectares of wetlands in India and it has estimated that fresh water wetlands amount to up to around 20% with the biodiversity in India. Studies have demonstrated alarming numbers of marshland devastation in India. This level has been believed by professionals at up to 2-3% reduction each year. Pallikaranai Marsh
Pallikaranai is usually locally referred to as Kazhiveli (a generic Tamil name for marshes and swamps). It is situated in Chennai and is one such important marshland which has been inside the preview from the government and NGOs equally. This marshland is a 50 km wetland located in the South of Chennai. Pallikaranai Marsh provides the most diverse natural refuge of the region with over 330 types of plants and animals.
According to a census taken by an NGO group Namma Pallikaranai, the heterogeneous ecosystem in the marshland supports about 337 species of flora and fauna. Of the faunal groups, chickens, fishes and reptiles would be the most prominent.
