The Scarlet Letter: Fictional Criticism
Published in 1850, The Scarlet Letter is considered Nathaniel Hawthorne's most famous work, and the first quintessentially American novel in style, topic, and terminology. Set in seventeenth-century Puritan Ma, the new centers throughout the travails of Hester Prynne, who gives birth to daughter Gem after an adulterous affair. Hawthorne's new concerns the outcomes of the affair, rather than the affair itself. Hawthorn uses Hester's public shaming as a springboard to explore the ongoing taboos of Puritan Fresh England during his period; furthermore, the novel raises issues that are just as controversial today as they were then. Nathaniel Hawthorne, a seriously acclaimed American writer from the nineteenth century, was born in Salem, Ma in 1804. The novelist's book, The Scarlet Notice, is said to be his most commendable work, and universally deemed a fictional classic, regarding sin and its particular inherent consequences. Some think Hawthorne's function related to his own personal impression of disgrace regarding his ancestors' persecuting roles inside the seventeenth 100 years Salem Witch Trials, fantastic views regarding a female's role in society (Baym 49-70; Answers Corp., " Duyckinck”). Simply by indirectly dealing with his feeling of guilt through fictional circumstances, this individual shows his viewpoint to be highly important of the Puritans, while instructing a strong moral lesson in the process. Graduating in the middle of his class by Bowdoin College in 1825, he continued to write many different novels, brief stories, and articles.
